HYW English UPDATE 2

OK, so after two years I've finally given in to having a section of the FORUM specifically set up to discuss painting techniques, display examples, show your latest projects and chat about this vital part of the hobby. Manufacturers please feel free to post up your sculpts, ask questions about what the gamers are after and generally promote your work.. no charge! Painters, please also feel free to post up your work for comment and critique. I can't promise the unreserved adulation characteristic of some other fora but I would hope you'd get constructive and measured comment!

HYW English UPDATE 2

Post by Atheling » Sun Mar 16, 2008 4:15 pm

Hi,

Here's a few quick pics of one of the units in my HYW English army that I'm currently preparing for "Havok!" which, as I'm sure most of you will know, is taking place at Gripping Beast HQ in Evesham on March 30th.

Apologies for the quality of the pics, but as I said they were taken very quickly as I'm very buisy painting the army up presently. I'll update the pics and post the rest of the army after the event.

Hope you enjoy them all the same :D .

PS. I've recently moved my post to the proper sub-forum.

Darrell,
After seeing these figures at the club, all I can say is..these images do not do your work justice! Don't get me wrong they look great in the images but much better in real life. The research into the period is also very impressive, a labor of love I think? I would love to do something for this period but wouldn't know where to start! Made me want to get home and paint.

You just stick to getting your Prussians and French done before wandering off into yet another period

Exactly Dave...Darrell stop showing me these great figures. It's all your fault that I have bought more castings in another period. Nothing to do with my lack of staying power!!!

Hi,
very nice. I do like units that tell a story of their own on the table.

Dave,

You're going to have to buckle under or you will have Mr O'Brien to deal with my lad  .

If (when  ) you get around to doing some Late Medieval's then I'd be glad to assist you in any way you like (barr painting the little fella's  ).

For now though, here's some more (once again I rushed the snaps so please forgive the quality, I'll remedy it after the weekend of the 30th):

Ha, my dastardly play has worked! Now you enter the realm of Darrell Coeur le Poussin  (and what a funny old place it can be!).

Any help you need just give me a shout David.

Darrell.

Really wonderful! Very nice work.
I'm currently working on a Burgundian Ordonnance army (mostly Foundry) for Field of Glory, but I'm thinking about starting a French HYW Perry army later this year.

Darrell,
fantastic and inspiring work.
Please could you explain a little about the basing.
Is this for WAB? How many figures does each of your longbow units amount to? I'm more used to seeing neatly ranked up units on square bases and your work is a fantastic change for the better.

Thanks for the compliment :) .

Is this for WAB?
Yep. Basically I'm more interested in putting together units that 'look right' than opting for conventional WAB basing. If someone I play complains then so be it, they are probably much more interested in winning a game than playing the game if you see what I mean? Actually it 'opens' up the flamks of my units so it's me that's at a disadvantage :D .
How many figures does each of your longbow units amount to?
OK, at the time of painting each unit was to represent 18 Longbows. However, with the basing for each mini I allowed 20mm in width by 30mm in depth, I could easily say that the unit represents three ranks of nine mini's.

Yep, I really think that the visual appeal of a unit of toy soldiers is what matters. Also, hopefully I will be able to use the units with different rule systems without too much of a fuss.

Hope that helps answer some of your queries? Feel free to ask anything you want :) .

Cheers,

Darrell.

Darrell, many thanks for taking the trouble to respond point by point.
I think this is the way to go in so many periods; each base or in your case, unit as a small vignette. Please do put up the rest of your army as you complete each unit. you have a few photos of bill's lovely 100 Years War figures on your web-site. Do you know of any more pictures elsewhere?

I've got some stored on my PC. I'll be seeing Bill at Havok! (Gripping Beast HQ, Evesham) this weekend for the Late Med. Campaign day so I'll ask him if I, or possibly himself, can post the rest here.

There should be another unit or two of longbows up and coming within the next few days. I have had to borrow the rest of the army for Havok! as time was limited. Still, better than hurrying things :) .

Cheers,

Darrell.

Darrell,

Really looking forward to more pictures.
can I ask a very basic question for which there is probably no simple answer? What are the best sources for livery and shield designs. I can find lots of pictures of shields but not sure how this translates into what the knights are wearing?
