Hello All
looking for any advice on basing my 28mm ACW and British Marlburian brigade commanders" how have you done it "
single mounted figure or with a Aide de Camp ?
Also what size bases is suitable for brigade commander... Square rectangle or round ?

I like to try and get a couple of figures on my command bases, especially for foot figures. I also prefer round bases as this allows them to stand out more from the surrounding rectangular bases but there is no right or wrong way to do this. Just do what you prefer.

I normally place brigade commanders on 40mm round bases as a single model. I reserve two model stands for higher level commanders and use 60mm round bases. My armies are normally not large enough to represent more than a single corps, but I suppose I would create a true vignette for a commander-in-chief with three or more models...

The higher the command the more figures I like to use.
This is my Corps commander for my Russians.


My infantry brigadiers have two foot figures but my cavalry brigadiers only have one mounted figure. My infantry division commanders usually have one mounted and one foot figure or two mounted figures.

Hi Andrew,

For my Napoleonic and Marlburian British brigade commanders I use a 80mm circular base. (see below)
For my infantry brigade commanders I'll probably copy my friend Jim's aka Coffindodger's command bases of three figures on probably a 60mm circular base.

P.S. Dave on the subject of your Russian commander, it must be like seeing yourself in the mirror!!!

Actually, I use a 50mm round base for all brigade commanders with either two or thee foot models or one mounted model.

The figure was picked specifically for that likeness. Unfortunately my American commander no longer looks like me as I had more hair and no glasses we it was sculpted for me

For your prompt replys just confirmed what i thought 50mm dia base is fine
For my British WSS Brigades going to put 2 mounted figures on each brigade commander and a Aide de Camp (runner).
And for my ACW Confederates going to go with 40mm dia base single mounted figure and maybe one figure on foot hmmmmmmmmmmmm..
just as an after thought what size bases do you guys do for artillery
70x60mm or 80x60mm or something completey different?.. ha

My Russian artillery is based on a 60mm frontage 80mm deep.

ordered some bases to suit..

While not up to the high standards of most my brigadiers are a single figure on 40mm square base. My divisional commander is 2 figures on a 50mm square base. And if I ever need a bigger command bases it'll be, you guessed it, 3 figures on a 60mm square base Apologies for the poor pictures and they really do look better from 3 feet

First and foremost, your officer figures HAVE to stand out. At a glance, you need to know that he is not a spare infantry or cavalry stand.

For that reason, I don't base officers on square bases. They have a bad tendency of getting ranked up with the troopers, especially cavalry. Yes, I've had it happen a lot where a brigade or divisional commander blends sufficiently into a unit that he cannot be seen. I usually use round or oddly shaped bases for that reason.

Second, every commander has a staff of some sort. Cavalry brigadiers often had orderly trumpeters seconded from one of their respective units. For a brigadier, it may just be his aides de camp, though as the staff structure got formalized even a Brigadier would acquire a Brigade Major and orderly officers. Officers also had escorts, especially at Corps level. That's another great reason to put a figure on a diorama.

For the ACW, Union officers were authorized a brigade standard and somebody would carry that. Same for Division and Corps. It's a great diorama tool, and for post-1862 Union forces, I'd say nigh-on mandatory.

Finally, you always have the option of your commander conferring with some of his subordinates.

I mostly paint in 15mm, but for my RtE projects I am putting brigadiers on a 40mm round with a cavalry trumpeter or an aide de camp. Division and Corps go on 50mm rounds, with several mounted and/or dismounted figures to go on the base. Whenever I have enough for Nappy or another Army commander, I plan a REAL diorama on a 3" base. Army HQ seldom if ever moved, even if the C-in-C is out and about. Just too many staff members.

I like the round base for commanders, here is my King Charles for VWQ.



Only thing I can claim is the base, I bought the figures years ago.

Kippax,me old fruit, you'll know better than most that Brigadiers tend to have a number of "Flunkies " round and about! That said i tend to go for round 50mm bases and try and make them in to vignettes.
